Betting Odds Explained: Decimal and Probability

Quick Summary

  • Decimal odds multiply your stake: stake times odds equals total return.
  • Implied probability is 1 divided by the decimal odds.
  • The bookmaker margin makes implied probabilities add up to more than 100 per cent.
  • All examples are hypothetical and not tied to any real match.

Odds tell you two things at once: what a winning bet pays and how likely the bookmaker thinks the outcome is. Once you can read them, every sportsbook screen becomes easier. This guide uses decimal odds, the format most commonly shown, with made-up examples in Taka. It also shows how to find the margin hidden in a market.

Reading decimal odds

Decimal odds show your total return per 1 staked, including your stake. Multiply stake by odds. At 2.50, a ৳400 stake returns ৳1,000, which is ৳600 profit. At 1.50, the same ৳400 returns ৳600, a profit of ৳200.

Lower odds mean the outcome is rated more likely; higher odds mean less likely. A price of 1.01 is nearly certain by the book's view and 51.00 is a long shot.

Decimal oddsStakeTotal returnProfit
1.50৳400৳600৳200
2.00৳400৳800৳400
2.50৳400৳1,000৳600
5.00৳400৳2,000৳1,600

Implied probability

Divide 1 by the decimal odds to find the implied chance. At 2.00 it is 50 per cent; at 4.00, 25 per cent; at 1.25, 80 per cent. This tells you what the price claims about the outcome, before margin.

Use it as a sanity check. If your own view of an outcome is much lower than the implied figure, the price is poor value for you; if it is higher, the price may be fair or good. It is a way to think, not a way to win.

Other formats: fractional and American

Fractional odds such as 6/4 show profit relative to stake: you win 6 for every 4 staked. Convert to decimal by dividing and adding 1, so 6/4 becomes 2.50. American odds use plus and minus: +150 means 150 profit on 100 staked, equal to 2.50 decimal; -200 means you stake 200 to win 100, equal to 1.50.

Sportsbooks often let you switch format in settings. Pick one and stay with it to avoid mistakes.

  • Fractional 6/4 equals decimal 2.50.
  • American +150 equals decimal 2.50.
  • American -200 equals decimal 1.50.

The margin hidden in every market

Add up the implied probabilities of every outcome in a market. If it comes to more than 100 per cent, the extra is the bookmaker's margin. For a two-way market priced 1.90 and 1.90, each side implies about 52.6 per cent, totalling about 105.3 per cent. That 5.3 gap is the built-in cost of betting.

Markets with more outcomes, such as outright winners and correct score, usually carry larger margins. Our house edge article shows how this idea applies across casino and sports.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do decimal odds of 2.00 mean?

A winning bet returns twice your stake, including the stake, so profit equals the stake. The price implies a 50 per cent chance before the margin. A ৳500 stake returns ৳1,000.

Are higher odds better?

Higher odds pay more but imply a lower chance. A big price is only good value if the real chance is higher than the implied probability. Otherwise it is simply a rarer win.

What is the bookmaker margin?

It is the gap between the implied probabilities of all outcomes and 100 per cent. It is how a sportsbook earns whatever the result. Lower margin markets cost you less over time.
