Guide
Teen Patti hand rankings
Quick Summary
- Teen Patti uses three cards; the best hand is a trail (three of a kind).
- From high to low: trail, pure sequence, sequence, colour, pair, high card.
- Rules for sequences and tie-breaks vary by table; check the game screen.
- Rankings tell you which hand wins, not how to beat the house edge.
Teen Patti is played with three cards, so the hand rankings are short and quick to learn. Even so, players mix up the order of a pure sequence and a colour, or are unsure how ties break. This guide lists the standard ranking from highest to lowest, with plain examples, and flags the places where table rules differ.
The standard ranking, high to low
Most tables use this order. A higher category always beats a lower one.
| Rank | Hand | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Trail (set) | Three cards of the same rank, such as three kings |
| 2 | Pure sequence (straight flush) | Three consecutive cards of the same suit |
| 3 | Sequence (straight) | Three consecutive cards of mixed suits |
| 4 | Colour (flush) | Three cards of the same suit, not consecutive |
| 5 | Pair | Two cards of the same rank |
| 6 | High card | None of the above; highest card decides |
Each hand in more detail
A trail is the rarest and strongest hand. When two players hold trails, the higher rank wins, with three aces on top. A pure sequence is next: for example, the 5, 6 and 7 of hearts. A sequence has the same ranks but in mixed suits, so it loses to a pure one.
A colour is three cards of one suit that do not form a sequence. A pair has two matching ranks, with the third card as a kicker for tie-breaks. If nothing matches, the hand is judged by its highest card, then the next, and so on.
- Trail: three of a kind, highest rank wins ties.
- Pure sequence: same suit, consecutive.
- Sequence: consecutive, mixed suits.
- Colour: same suit, not consecutive.
- Pair: two of a kind with a kicker.
- High card: compare top cards down.
Where table rules differ
Some details are not universal. The main one is how the ace plays in sequences. Commonly A-K-Q is the highest sequence and A-2-3 is the next, but some tables rank them differently. Tie-breaking between equal hands, handling of suits, and treatment of identical hands may also vary. Wild card or joker variants change everything.
Always open the game's help screen on the table you play, and read the rules before joining. If the rules are not visible, do not guess with real money. Our page on live Teen Patti gives the wider picture of how the game is offered.
Rankings and the odds
Knowing the order helps you follow the game, but the rarity of hands is what matters for decisions. Pairs and high cards come up often, while trails and pure sequences are rare. That is why the biggest payouts are attached to them.
In a live or table version against the dealer, the payout table sets the edge, so compare it with the notes on house edge. In all cases, set a budget first with bankroll management, and keep stakes steady.
Related card games
If Teen Patti appeals to you, Andar Bahar offers a simpler, faster format with very few decisions. Compare the pace and rules of each before you stake. Both are games of chance with an edge for the house.
One practical tip for any variant: take your time on the first few hands. Lay out the cards, name the category aloud, and compare against the table above before acting. The ranking becomes automatic after a few sessions, and slow, deliberate play at the start costs nothing while a misread hand can cost a stake. If a table's rules look different from the ones here, trust the table and ask support before you play.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the highest hand in Teen Patti?
A trail, which is three cards of the same rank. Three aces is the best trail. It beats every other hand at the table.
Does a pure sequence beat a trail?
No. In the standard ranking, a trail is above a pure sequence. Some house variants differ, so read the table rules.
Is A-2-3 a valid sequence?
At most tables yes, and it is usually the second highest sequence behind A-K-Q. Rules vary, so check the help screen of the game you play.
How is a tie between two pairs broken?
The higher pair wins. If the pairs match, the third card decides. Details can vary, so confirm in the game rules.
Does knowing rankings improve my odds?
It helps you play correctly, but it cannot remove the house edge. See our Teen Patti page for the game format.
